Welcome to a Conversation with History. I'm Harry Kreisler of the Institute of International Studies. Our distinguished guest today is Admiral Leighton W. Smith Jr. His 34 1/2 year career in the navy culminated in a fourth star and his appointment as Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Commander in Chief, Allied Forces, Southern Europe. He also served as Commander of Implementation Forces (IFOR), the multinational force tasked to implement the military aspects of the peace agreement on Bosnia-Hercegovina. Joining us in the studio is Professor Tom Barnes. Professor Barnes is a professor of history and law at UC Berkeley.
